Yoga for Scoliosis with Elise Miller (Part 1 of Teacher Practicum)

This workshop is for anyone wanting to experience firsthand the benefits of yoga for spinal health.

Schedule:

Friday-Sunday March 20-22: 3 Sessions

  • Friday March 20th: 2:00 to 5:00 pm PT

  • Saturday March 21st: 12:30 to 5:30 pm PT (1/2 hour break)

  • Sunday March 22nd: 10:30 am to 1 pm PT

The weekend starts on Friday afternoon and continues through Sunday. You can sign up for the full workshop or for individual Friday, Saturday or Sunday sessions separately.

Course Description

This is an excellent opportunity for teachers to learn how to assist their students living with scoliosis. For those teachers wishing to become a Yoga for Scoliosis Trainer, it is Part 1 of the 20-hour course requirement + practicum. 

Both teachers and their students with scoliosis are encouraged to register and attend the workshop to enhance their learning. 

The weekend starts on Friday evening and continues through Sunday. You can sign up for the full workshop or for individual Friday, Saturday or Sunday sessions separately. 

Friday 2:00-5:00 pm

Elise will discuss the physical and psychological causes and effects of scoliosis, identify different patterns of scoliosis, and introduce how to approach yoga for someone with scoliosis.

Saturday, 12:30-5:30 pm

Sunday 10:30-1:00 pm

On Saturday and Sunday, yoga poses that are most beneficial for scoliosis will be taught. The emphasis will be on standing poses, back strengtheners, simple twists and breath awareness. Adjustments and props will be used to assist participants to work with their own scoliosis.

This workshop is both in person and online. 

Recordings will be available for all attendees for one month.

Bio: Elise Browning Miller, M.A. in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of North Carolina, is a Senior Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher (CIYT) and is also certified with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT). Elise resides in Carmel, CA and has been teaching yoga throughout the United States and internationally since 1976. Elise was a founding owner of California Yoga Center (CYC) in Mountain, CA in 1980. Having sold the business in 2025, Elise continues to teaches classes and workshops at CYC. Elise has successfully used yoga to minimize the effects of her own scoliosis and sees clients privately on line and in person in Mountain View at CYC and in Carmel for scoliosis and back related issues.

She has published numerous articles on scoliosis and other yoga related subjects in Yoga Journal and other national magazines. Elise has studied with B.K.S. Iyengar and the Iyengar family at Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIYMI) in Pune, India since 1978.

She has produced the books, Yoga for Scoliosis – A Path for Students & Teachers and

Yoga Anytime, Anywhere and 2 booklets, Yoga for Scoliosis and Yoga for Back Care.

Also, she has available on streaming, Yoga for Scoliosis DVD and Intermediate Yoga in Fiji DVD.

Elise’s joyous personality and ease of communication endear her to students with a teaching style that is down-to-earth, precise, and nurturing.
